Mezcal El Llorón is a 100% family-owned mezcal brand, built on four generations deeply rooted in the art and tradition of mezcal making. Officially registered in 1999, the brand is led by three brothers—two partners and one collaborator—and was founded by their father, whose vision and passion shaped its identity.
Based in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, within the Tlacolula district, El Llorón proudly contributes to the local economy by creating employment opportunities for the surrounding community, honoring mezcal not only as a product, but as a way of life.
The story behind El Llorón is deeply personal. One day, while accompanying his godfather to seek support from the state governor, the founder experienced a moment that profoundly moved him. Overwhelmed by emotion, he returned to the distillery and poured himself a mezcal to release his soul—breaking into tears. In that moment of vulnerability, he made a promise to himself: to create his own mezcal brand.
From that day forward, the philosophy of El Llorón was born:
